february week 4: oceans and fish

oceans and fish

any book can be interchanged with whichever ocean/fish books are available at the library

monday-

calendar and weather

book: "swimmy" by leo leoni

language: sound out rhyming words on chalk board. fish, dish, wish, crab, slab, dab, sand, bland, grand, sea, flea, pea. also write them on flash cards for future use.

art: make sea urchins using toothpicks and apples. later cut them up for snack.

science/math: play object sink or float. make a chart and have kids guess if object will sink or float. test hypothesis. then count how many you guessed correctly, how many sunk or floated, and then discuss properties of things that sunk or floated. (density, weight, surface area.)

Food: form larger fish out of fishy crackers. color one fish black (with food coloring marker) like "swimmy" to use for the eye. eat them!

tuesday-

calendar and weather

book: “the magic school bus- on the ocean floor” by joanna cole

language: “o” is for ocean and other “o” words. use wooden letters (or other) to have the kids spell out words that begin with "o." odd, on, off, old, ode, over, odor, own, owl, out, ouch, etc. make flash cards with new words.

art: make rainbow fish with colored sand, glue, construction paper, foil, sequins etc. or make rainbow sand bottles. talk about how sand forms from rocks and shells. scrape rocks against each other to show one way sand forms. talk about wind and water erosion.

science/math: play liquid sink or float. use honey, oil, colored juice, dish soap, etc. talk about why oil floats (density and hydrophobic properties). chart guesses and count up results.

music: help kids write a song about fish using the piano.

wednesday-

calendar and weather

books:
“the sea is salty” by anita ganeri
“life in a coral reef” by wendy pfeffer

language: “f” for fish and other words. kids help come up with words that begin with "f." write them on flash cards with the kids. fish, fin, fig, fill, file, find, fine, five, fat, fan, foot, for, fun, etc.
(note: when i group my flash cards for review, i like to do it by "rhyme" not by starting letter. this really seems to help with recognizing sound patterns, long & short vowel sounds, etc. example: grouping five, hive, dive is better than grouping words that begin with the same letter. but for sounding out new words, we like to change things up and try a variety of methods.)

art: make coffee filter jellyfish (small ones can also be made with cupcake liners) by painting them with water color, then using gift wrap ribbon, crepe paper, or whatever you have on hand for the tentacles. make toilet paper roll sea sponges. roll or spray in glue and sprinkle with glitter, or just paint with acrylics.

math/science: use measuring cups to pour water into a bowl. write down and then add up how much water you put in. add salt, taste. talk about why the ocean is salty and why it is easier to float in salt water. (water flowing into the ocean picks up salt and other minerals from rocks along the way, salt water is denser than fresh water, so it can hold up more weight)

exercise: dance to ocean music (try youtube), use scarves or ribbons to make letter shapes, waves, and ripples as you dance.

thursday-

books: “our mysterious ocean” from reader's digest
"atlantic" by brian g. karas

language: write and illustrate fish stories. older children can write their own, with help. younger children can draw, color, and dictate the text.

art: make fishing pole with magnet end and color the fish you catch, you can use them in the book project if you want.

math/science: play “go fish." you can make your own cards if you don't have the game (print or draw four octopuses, four seahorses, four dolphins, etc.)

spanish: learn spanish ocean words, such as: dophin-delphin, ocean-mar, fish-pescado, seahorse-hipocampo, wave-ola. . .

friday-

take a field trip to the local aquarium or go to an indoor public pool to swim or even find some beach toys and have a splash in the bath.
