april week 2: weather

day 1:

calendar and weather

books-
talk about water cycle, weather forcasting, what causes weather


language-introduce words for the week on chalkboard: rain, wind, snow, hail, storm, sun, hot, cold. sound them out and make flash cards, practice sight recognition. use "rain" theme from c.r. book to do word plays and finger plays.

math/science-match clouds with numbers 1-10 on them to clouds with corresponding number of raindrops.
if you're lucky enough to have a rainy day this week (we were) then put a bucket out to collect rain and measure it at the end of the day.
fill a jar with water and mark the water line. place it in the window and mark the water line again at the end of the week. review water cycle, evaporation, etc.

art-have the children create their own weather forcast for the week. help them separate a paper into 5 day columns and let them color, cut, glue, etc. what they think the weather will be like. compare to actual weather.

food-

day 2:

calendar and weather

books:

talk about positive weather effects, i.e. why we need rain, snow, sun, wind and how they occur. talk about how rainbows are formed.

language- review words of the week. use "rainbow readers" file folder to match number words and color words. write in the "snow" make powdered sugar piles on table and help the kids write in it with their fingers. practice letters with younger children, practice names, words of the week, etc. with older children

art:
use eyedroppers and colored water to make droplet rainbows. make wax paper and crayon shaving rainbows.

science/math- make rainbows with water jars or spray bottles and sunlight or flashlights, or use a prism to cast a rainbow onto white paper. have the children color over the cast rainbow.

day 3:

calendar and weather

books-

use "weather watchers" file folder to have children match destructive or positive weather situations.

language-

art: make wind socks. play the sounds of a thunder storm and have the kids draw or paint what they hear/feel in greys and blacks.

music: thunder music dance
vivaldi's four seasons

science/math: water/air pressure demo. poke 3 holes in milk jug. . .
