march week 1: birthdays & dr. suess

dr. suess's birthday week
you can pick your favorite dr. suess books and cater all projects to those as well.

monday-

book: "green eggs and ham." talk about trying new things, and trying new foods, and why healthy foods are important for our bodies.

language: use chalkboard to practice words from the book. ham, am, sam, box, fox, train, rain, etc. have kids practice writing them if age appropriate. add them to flash cards.

art: make place mats. help them trace and color a plate, fork, spoon, knife, and cup bottom. they can then cut out their dishes and glue them into place on their place mats, which can be laminated. then they can draw or color or cut out from magazines some of their favorite healthy foods and pretend to serve dinner.

science/math: gather foods and put them in a large bag. as kids pick each item out of the bag, draw it on a chart and then have kids label it as healthy or not so healthy. also help them learn what beneficial properties the healthy foods have and how that helps our bodies (protein for muscles and long energy, vitamin k for eyesight, calcium and vitamin d for bones, carbs for quick energy, etc.) add those properties to chart and review.

food: make green eggs and ham (or bacon) for lunch and eat them using your new place mats.

tuesday-

book: "horton hatches the egg." talk about following through and being trustworthy.

language: have kids listen as you read a few paragraphs and pick out the words that rhyme. where the spelling is similar, add words to flash cards and sound them out with the kids. where the spelling is different, talk about the the differences and how though they are spelled differently, they still rhyme (if age appropriate.)

art: decorate crazy eggs with markers, paint, etc. and then hollow them out. (use a pin to poke small holes in each end and then blow contents out.)

science/math: use eggs in carton to play math games. count the eggs, take some away and count again. add some in and count again. then do simple addition and subtraction (how many eggs do we have if we have three on this end plus two on that end, etc.)

music:

wednesday-

book: bartholomew and the oobleck

projects: make glurch, make green jello for snack

thursday-

book: happy birthday to you

art: make mini cakes and frost and decorate them. make silly wishes and blow out the candles.
